Product Description:Manufacturing is one of the most physically challenging environments to work in.Many common processes
and equipment are used in manufacturing industries. Safety issues are also common to most industry processes. Workers can encounter many hazards--physical and/or chemical--and other issues that compromise their safety shoes such as excessive noise, dangerous machines and conditions that can cause injury to their musculoskeletal system.
Ergonomics
Ergonomics deals with the workers' physical safety. The manufacturing environment lends itself to tasks that may damage a person's musculoskeletal system. Other machine safety includes the lockout/tagout procedure to stop machinery when it is being serviced, machine guarding and electrical safety precautions. These include tasks that put a person in an awkward posture, usually arising from improperly designed workstations, tools and equipment; require repetitive and forceful movements that could lead to tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome; and put the worker in extreme temperatures. Ergonomics helps prevent these potential injuries by matching the job to the worker. This means having a workstation that fits with the worker and doesn't require him to have an unnatural posture, tools that help move materials around, among others designed to make work less physically demanding.
Physical and Chemical Hazards
A big safety boots issue in manufacturing is the abundance of physical and sometimes chemical hazards. Physical hazards are items that workers can trip on, fall on or fall from and things that can fall on the worker. Chemical hazards are chemicals that can make a person ill or damage their bodies such as those containing volatile organic compounds. Work areas that are free of clutter will leave workers less prone to hazards, and having clear signs indicating hazards helps prevent accidents and injuries.
Machine Safety
Most, if not all, manufacturing facilities have machines. Safety around machines is a safety issue manufacturers must be aware of. No body parts should ever cross the machine's point of operation where they can get severed, cut or pulled into the machine. Additionally, the machine may also produce sparks or fragments that can injure workers. As such, keeping clear of the machine while it is in operation is a big safety factor. Machines must have proper safeguards such as rails, screens and other guards to ensure worker safety.
Hearing Safety
Machine noise inside manufacturing facilities can become excessive and pose a hearing safety issue. Signs of occupational hearing loss include the inability to hear high-pitched sounds, difficulty understanding speech and ringing in the ears. Workers should not be exposed to excessive noise for prolonged periods of time. Safety glasses, ear plugs, hard hats, face shields, steel-toed work boots, gloves, and respiratory masks fall into the category of PPE. Other types of PPE are fall protection harnesses, lift-aids with anchors, and fence-type guarding to prevent falls.A noise level more than 85 decibels over eight hours can cause hearing damage. As such, workers who have to work with loud machinery should have hearing protection or be able to work in an enclosed area, shielding them from the noise.
