Introduction:
Latin Name: Salvia miltorrhiza bunge
Slavia miltiorrhiza is a traditional chinese medicine also known as DanShen, the herb is used for supporting heart and liver functions. It is also used for skin problems, like acne and boils. Traditionally used to stabilize the heart and calm the nerves, and to lighten or to remove stagnant blood. Clinical experience shows that the roots are effective against angina pectoris, cerebral atherosclerosis, intravascular clotting and phlebitis, Danshen reduces blood pressure, improves circulation by dilating the blood vessels, and reduces blood cholesterol.
Pharmacological Functions:
1. Tanshinone IIA exerts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.
2. Limit the stickiness of blood platelets.
3. Help to improve blood circulation.
4. Chemicals in Danshen may relax and widen blood vessels, especially those around the heart.
5. Increase the force of heartbeats and slow the heart rate slightly.
6. Danshen may stop the spread of several different cancer cell types.
7. Clear away heart fire and calm the mind.
8. Expand blood vessels, increase coronary blood flow and blood pressure.
Uses:
Danshen is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine, and to prevent and treat heart conditions and strokes. The root (Radix Salvia miltiorrhiza) is used for the treatment of coronary heart disease in Chinese medicines.
