Aerogel is a solid gel material with a porous
network structure with internal pores filled with air. Professor Kistler of the United States obtained silica aerogel for the first time under supercritical drying conditions by sol-gel method with water glass. There are many kinds of aerogels, of which SiO2 aerogel is the most common, translucent light blue, and the quality is ultra-light like "solid smoke". As a typical porous material, SiO2 aerogel is filled with air (or other gas) in most of its interior space, and its skeleton is only 0.15% to 15% of the total volume. The aerogel has an average pore size of about 25 nm, and the air molecules (free path 50-70 nm) cannot move freely in between. In addition, there are many closed holes in the aerogel skeleton with different sizes of "dead end", which increases the aerogel. The path of solid heat transfer, so the aerogel is a poor conductor of heat.

Nano-aerogel felts are the best choice for equipment that requires insulation while requiring small size and light weight. For example, ladle, torpedo, tundish, etc. in the metallurgical industry can realize the expansion of these devices by using nano-aerogel felt without changing the steel structure, and at the same time, can achieve a good thermal insulation effect. On a 100-ton steel ladle in a steel mill, the nano-aerogel felt was used instead of the traditional heat-insulating board to carry out the experiment. The test results are as follows:
1. Under the condition of the same thickness of the heat insulating material, the temperature of the outer wall of the ladle using the nano aerogel felt is 100-130 lower than that of the outer wall of the ladle using the traditional heat insulating board, which effectively reduces the thermal deformation of the ladle shell. .
2. Under the condition that the outer wall temperature of the ladle is the same, the 20mm thick nano-aerogel felt can replace the traditional heat insulation board of 30mm thickness to realize the expansion of the ladle.
3. Using nano-aerogel felt, the molten steel in the ladle is cooled slowly, which is conducive to the stability of the molten steel temperature.
4. It has good chemical stability, and it does not decompose, degrade, and not powder.
