Product Description:
A conch shell made into a horn is one of Hinduism and Buddhism's most ancient ritual objects. Even many
statues depict deities holding a horn, such as the vedic god Indra who is often portrayed with a conch in hand. Known as a "shanka" or "sankha", the ocean conch is stripped of its natural brown color to reveal the inner nacre and then polished and often carved such as the one shown Some are adorned with hammered silver by the time they reach Buddhist Tibet, while others are carved with images of deities or sacred symbols. The tip of the shell whorl is cut off to from a mouthpiece, turning the conch into a single tone wind instrument. The sound is loud and sonorous. I have seen Hindu holy men blow the horns in the early morning at cremations along the Baghmati River at Pashupatinath in Kathmandu. It is believed that the sound of the horn heralds the glory of the gods. In ancient times in India, it was also used as a trumpet in battle, dating back to the epic Mahabharata, which notes that a conch shell was blown at the beginning of war.
