Unlike normal working boots, safety boots require certain adjustments to make sure that they can be called safety boots. These adjustments, or additions, are usually monitored by a regulation authority which determines the quality of the safety boot and gives the necessary endorsements for any particular range of safety boots to enable them to be sold the general public and commercial operations as such.
In the United Kingdom (UK), safety boots that comply with such standards will be allowed to display the Kitemark on their products – a symbol of the British Standards Institute (BSI). Such is the familiarity with consumers of the Kitemark as a symbol of quality and maintaining standards that the United States (US) and other global manufacturers in many other countries also use the Kitemark system.
Safety boots can be reinforced in several ways. The most notable additions are the incorporation of steel into areas where the foot is most susceptible of sustaining damage. These are steel reinforced toe-caps and steel mid-sole added to the boot’s sole. These in turn prevent damage to toes from heavy objects falling onto them, and also help prevent damage to the sole of the foot from sharp objects that might penetrate the base of the boot. Safety boots can also incorporate additional support around the ankle, either from extra thick padding to the boot’s inner, or from extra protection garnered from the outer, with the addition of super-strength thick rubber for example.
